Harry Potter magically appears

It’s a red-letter day for Harry Potter fans, with lots of events around the area to mark the release of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, the script of a stage play that catches up with Harry and his family and friends as adults. Here are just a few local celebrations; see www.ohio.com for more details.

■ Kent Potterfest: Begins at 6 p.m. Saturday in downtown Kent, including Acorn Alley. Costume contests for kids and adults, live music, crafts, a kids’ potion class, adult “mixology” classes, photo booths and face painting. http://mainstreetkent.org, 330-677-8000.

■ The Learned Owl: Release party at 10 p.m. Saturday, with Potter-related activities. 204 N. Main St., Hudson. www.learnedowl.com.

■ Barnes & Noble Harry Potter Countdown to Midnight: Begins at 8 p.m., official release at midnight. Share favorite Potter memories, giveaways and other activities. https://stores.barnesandnoble.com/store/2902.

■ Harry Potter birthday party: Medina’s Project Learn hosts an event from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday including many businesses in the square. Costume contest, food and drinks, selfie station. http://projectlearnmedina.org/.

■ Akron RubberDucks: Party at Sunday’s 2:05 p.m. game against the Bowie Baysox. Pass the O.W.L.S. trivia contest, a Goblet of Fire relay, Section 9¾, movie trivia, name that character and a best British accent contest. www.akronrubberducks.com.

Scene Ale Fest in Tremont

The eighth annual Scene Ale Fest returns Saturday to Lincoln Park in Cleveland’s Tremont neighborhood. The pet-friendly event, which runs from 1 to 7 p.m., will feature more than 130 beers from more than 60 breweries. There also will be games and music by the Collage Band, Joe Morehead Band and Walk of Shame. General admission tickets are $45 at the door. VIP tickets are $55. http://scenealefestival.com.

Summer fair at Lane Field

P.A.T.H. To The Summit Community Awareness Summer Faire runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Akron’s Lane Field, 650 Wooster Ave., Akron. Agencies will staff tables with information about their programs and various activities are also on hand for attendees.

Basketball games in Mason Park

United Disability Services’ All-Star Jam 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Mason Park in Akron. Proceeds benefit the UDS All-Star Training Club inclusive sports program. Youth, high school, adult, corporate and unified divisions open to all players of all abilities, food by Southern Thangs. Go hunting for dragonflies

Dragonflies are ancient insects; fossilized giant ancestors date back 325 million years. Find out more about them and maybe even net a couple with “Dragon Hunting 101” from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the F.A. Seiberling Nature Realm, Visitors Center, 1828 Smith Road, Akron. 330-865-8065.
