A sophomore Nordonia High School soccer player was initially unresponsive following an injury during a girls junior varsity soccer match between Nordonia and Stow high schools Wednesday afternoon.

She was resting in stable condition late Wednesday, Akron Children’s Hospital confirmed, after teammates had gathered at the medical center and tweeted updates that she had awakened.

Nate Rausch, the head varsity coach for the Stow girls soccer team, said the Nordonia goalkeeper went to the ground after a Stow forward challenged her for the ball in midair. It was not clear if the two players had collided.

The Macedonia Fire Department responded to Nordonia High School around 5:15 p.m., and the girl was transported to Akron Children’s.

Rausch said the teams were about 20 minutes into the first half of the match when the incident occurred. The game and the varsity match, which was scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., were both indefinitely postponed, Rausch said.

“It’s a scary incident to see an ambulance come in and see your friend is on the ground hurt,” he said.
