Beacon Journal staff report
A fire in an apartment kitchen Tuesday led to the evacuation of residents in the 101-unit Tower 43 complex in Kent.
Lt. James Samels with the Kent Fire Department said the fire was contained to the kitchen of the apartment in the Water Street building that provides housing to older adults. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
Samels said there were no injuries to firefighters or Tower 43 tenants or personnel.
The fire department received an alarm call at 12:32 p.m. and members of the Kent Fire Department arrived on the scene at 12:36 p.m.
Many tenants already were outside the complex when firefighters arrived, Samels said. Firefighters helped those who needed assistance get out of the building.
Firefighters contained the fire shortly after arriving.
Residents were allowed into an air-conditioned community room in the complex, while firefighters made sure there were no further signs of fire in complex.
Samels said tenants were allowed back into their units before the last fire truck left the scene around 3 p.m.
The tenant in the unit where the fire occurred was displaced. The American Red Cross had been contacted about finding a place for that person to stay, Samels said Tuesday afternoon.
Tower 43, which provides federally subsidized housing to older adults, is owned by Forest City, a publicly traded real estate investment trust headquartered in Cleveland.
