See 1949’s ‘All the King’s Men’
If you need yet another look at the nasty side of politics, the Tallmadge branch of the Akron-Summit County Public Library is showing the original, 1949 version of All the King’s Men at 6 p.m. Based on Robert Penn Warren’s novel about Willie Stark (a politician inspired by Huey Long), the film follows Willie’s change from idealist to corrupt power broker, with Broderick Crawford unforgettable as Stark. (Sean Penn also played the role in a 2006 adaption of Warren’s novel.) Oscars went to Crawford as best actor, Mercedes McCambridge as best supporting actress and the film as best picture of the year. Robert Rossen was also nominated for writing, directing and coediting the film.
Fall for full, flowing falls
Recent rains have made waterfalls especially full. The Conservatory for Cuyahoga Valley National Park recommends checking out Blue Hen Falls, a small but beautiful cascade at the end of an easy half-mile hiking trail. Parking is at 2001 Boston Mills Road, Boston Township.
