McKenney plans fundraiser
NEW FRANKLIN: Summit County Common Pleas Court Judge Todd McKenney, who is up for re-election in November, will have an Anchors Away! Fundraiser from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday.
The event will feature a pontoon ride to Channelbend, the home voted the favorite of the Akron Symphony’s 19th Annual Lakes Tour. Participants can park at 4399 State Park Drive in New Franklin and take a pontoon ride to the home where live music and hors d’oeuvres will be offered. The boat will make several trips from 2 to 5 p.m.

Author to discuss book
HUDSON: The battle for Ohio voters is underway. Learn about the epic political struggle for the Buckeye State at the Hudson Library & Historical Society at 7 p.m. Sept. 15.
Political science professor Daniel Coffey will discuss his book, Buckeye Battleground: Ohio, Campaigns, and Elections in the Twenty-First Century, which explains Ohio’s role as a swing state. Coffey is an assistant professor of political science at the University of Akron and a research fellow in the Ray C. Bliss Institute of Applied Politics.

Massillon
Police say couple shot dead
MASSILLON: Police say a Massillon couple was killed Saturday night by a man from Jackson Township who police suspect was the woman’s ex-boyfriend.
The Massillon Police Department Facebook page states officers received a call that a man and woman had been shot in their car at the 900 block of 17th Street Northeast.
The couple appeared to be leaving the male’s house in a car when they were both shot. The gunman then left the scene. The male, who was driving, died at the scene. The woman was flown to Akron General, where she died during surgery.
Police found the suspect at his residence, where police say he attempted to commit suicide before officers arrested him. He is currently in the hospital. Massillon police will not release names until Monday.

Vets group needs donations
AKRON: The Summit County Veterans Council still needs donations for this year’s Stand Down event Sept. 13, which provides free items and services to homeless and displaced veterans in the county, after a warehouse fire destroyed supplies.
The agency is short on sleeping bags, blankets and clothing such as hats, gloves, socks and footwear, but it will accept any donations, including monetary. Volunteers will be at the warehouse at 140 E. South St., Akron, from 9 a.m. to noon every Tuesday and Wednesday leading up to the event to accept donations.
Monetary, check and gift-card donations can be sent to Summit County Veterans Council Stand Down, c/o American Legion Post 175 at 3733 Fishcreek Road, Stow, OH 44224.

Schmidt to hold office hours
CUYAHOGA FALLS: Summit County Councilman John Schmidt will host public office hours from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Cuyahoga Falls Public Library, 2015 Third St.
He will be available to answer questions and hear concerns from constituents. He represents District 2, which encompasses most of Cuyahoga Falls, Munroe Falls and portions of Akron.

Food lovers get ready
WADSWORTH: The Taste of Wadsworth will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Aug. 31 in the city’s downtown area. The rain date is Sept. 7.
The event will feature more than 20 food trucks and restaurant vendors, a raffle and 50/50 drawing, music and kids activities. Proceeds benefit Downtown Wadsworth Inc.
