High school roundup: Howell’s 37 points leads Kenmore to victory

Kenmore 80, East 51

Amber Howell connected on 11-of-17 3-point attempts to score a game-high 37 points as the Cardinals won at East in a City Series shootout. Q’deare Dix added 22 points and Sarah Taylor scored 15, including the visitors’ only made free throw, for Kenmore, which improved to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the City Series.

Despite the scoring, Kenmore coach Yontami Jones was pleased with the teamwork.

“I think our defense turned our offense on,” Jones said. “And, Amber then had the hot hand tonight.”

East (1-2, 0-2) guard Diamond Jones scored 27 points with 10 rebounds and eight assists. Center Torey Whitehead scored 11 points and had eight rebounds and three blocked shots.

Ellet 39, Garfield 20

Forward Jerine Woods led the way in scoring for Ellet with nine points, including hitting 5-of-8 free throws. Guard Melanie Rorar scored seven points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds as Ellet improved to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the City Series.

North 44, Buchtel 39

Tia Balknight’s 15 points paced the Vikings to a City Series win at home. Buchtel took its first lead with four minutes to go in the game, before North regained the lead for good.

Windham 40,
Grand Valley 39

A Grand Valley 3-pointer with 40 seconds left put the Mustangs up by one. Windham’s Cali Apthorpe responded with a layup to put the Bombers up 40-39. Apthorpe finished with six points while Brittany Knight topped Windham with 19.

Twinsburg 41, 
St. Vincent-St. Mary 40

After seven ties and four lead changes, the Tigers pulled out a nonleague win at home. Junior forward Jasmine Bishop led Twinsburg to a season-opening win with 18 points. Annie Santucci led the Irish (1-2) with 12 points.

Tusky Valley 34,
Dover 27

Playing the entire game, Mariah Horstman scored 12 points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds to lead the Trojans over visiting Dover. Jordyn Kiser led all scorers with 17 points for the Tornadoes.

Triway 65, Dalton 51

Micah Findley led three Titans (2-1) in double-figure scoring with 21 points. Tanner Wirth contributed 18 points.

Kirsten Shoup posted a double-double for the Bulldogs (2-1) with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Rootstown 2,193

Jolson French rolled a 430 series, Brent Monroe had a 391 and Nick Toke’s 371, helped Crestwood improve to 4-1 overall.

Walsh Jesuit 2,511,
St. Vincent-St. Mary 2,342

Chad O’Connor’s 248 game and 456 series allowed the Warriors to post a win at Eastgate Lanes.
