Those balmy November temperatures almost produced a record in the Akron-Canton area, according to the National Weather Service.
The average local temperature in November through Monday afternoon was 48.6 degrees, the third warmest on record.
It was topped only by 49.5 degrees in November 1931 and by 48.8 degrees in November 1909.
Last month’s average temperature was about 6.8 degrees above normal for the Akron-Canton area in November, the weather service said.
The area’s highest temperature in November was 77 degrees on Nov. 5 and the low was 18 degrees on Nov. 23.
The Akron-Canton area recorded only a trace of snow in November on Nov. 14 and 22.
This year was the sixth November with only a trace of snow in the Akron-Canton area. Other years with only a trace of snow locally in November were 2009, 2001, 1998, 1985 and 1962, according to weather service records.
The most snow locally in November was 22.3 inches in 1950.
Northern Ohio is likely to experience a warmer-than-usual winter, according to the winter outlook released in October. The U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is predicting less precipitation than normal near the Great Lakes and the Ohio Valley.
The weather picture from December through February will likely be dominated by a strong El Nino that will affect the position of the Pacific jet stream. That is expected to produce rainy and cool weather from California to Texas to the Gulf Coast and Florida and up the East Coast to southern New England.
The strong El Nino is likely to produce above-normal temperatures and drier-than-usual weather in northern Ohio, said meteorologist Kirk Lombardi.
“That trend could continue through the rest of the winter,” he said.
Northern Ohio will likely get some severe winter storms but those are not part of the winter outlook and cannot be predicted months in advance.
