A Green man who was facing charges of rape and gross sexual imposition involving a preteen girl was found dead in the Summit County Jail last week.
The sheriff’s office reported Wednesday that Wayne K. Jordan, 63, was found unresponsive in his cell at 12:30 p.m. Friday.
“From the way he was found initially by the responding deputy, it appears to be a suicide,” sheriff’s spokesman Bill Holland said.
He declined to release details about why authorities believe it was a suicide.
The death remains under investigation.
The county medical examiner’s office has not released a cause of death.
A deputy and medical staff attempted to resuscitate Jordan but were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Jordan had been booked into the jail Oct. 2 for six counts of rape and three counts of gross sexual imposition stemming from alleged incidents over multiple years. The incidents dated back to July 2008 when the victim was 10 years old. He was being held on $100,000 bond.
Sheriff’s authorities said that he showed no signs of being suicidal when he was screened by medical staff at the jail.
According to court records, Jordan was to undergo a neuropsychological evaluation and assessment as part of his criminal case.
The last suicide in the jail took place in February 2012, Holland said.
