Quarterback Colin Kaepernick was placed on season-ending injured reserve by San Francisco on Saturday with a left shoulder injury, possibly signaling an end to his time with the 49ers just three seasons after he led them to a Super Bowl.
Kaepernick began the week coming off the team’s bye with soreness in his non-throwing shoulder and he brought it to the attention of the medical staff Monday. He received treatment throughout the week, but was listed as a full participant in practice.
He was listed as probable Friday to be available if needed for Sunday’s game at Seattle as the backup to promoted starter Blaine Gabbert.
But after the team submitted the injury report, Kaepernick returned to the training staff Friday following practice and said the shoulder wasn’t making any progress and then asked about his options. Surgery was considered a real possibility.
The 28-year-old Kaepernick’s $11.9 million 2016 contract would become fully guaranteed for injury if he’s still on the roster on April 1.
Because of that, many already figured Kaepernick’s time with the Niners (3-6) might be done in what so far has been a forgettable season.
Kaepernick’s time could be over with the franchise that drafted him.
Jets activate Enunwa
The New York Jets activated wide receiver Quincy Enunwa, adding him to the roster from the suspended list in time for their game against the Houston Texans on Sunday.
The Jets had a roster exemption until Monday for Enunwa, who returned to practice with the team this week after completing his four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy. Enunwa, who has eight catches for 94 yards, is expected to play against the Texans.
With Sheldon Richardson (hamstring) questionable to play, New York also promoted defensive end Mike Catapano from the practice squad Saturday.
To make room for Enunwa and Catapano, the Jets placed running back Zac Stacy on injured reserve after he broke his left ankle against Buffalo last week and waived safety Ronald Martin.
Packers upgrade Hyde
Safety Micah Hyde was upgraded to probable on the Green Bay Packers’ injury report for Sunday’s game at Minnesota, while cornerback Damarious Randall’s availability is now in question because of a hamstring injury.
Randall was added to the injury report as questionable after Saturday’s practice. The team’s first-round draft pick has had an impressive season.
On offense, right guard T.J. Lang was upgraded to probable with a shoulder injury. Out of the Packers’ front five, only center Corey Linsley is not on the injury report.
Receiver Ty Montgomery was downgraded to doubtful because of his ankle injury.
Williams is 50-50
Buffalo Bills coach Rex Ryan says there’s a 50-50 chance veteran defensive tackle Kyle Williams could miss the remainder of the season because of a left knee injury.
Ryan provided the prognosis following practice Saturday after revealing Williams experienced a setback in his recovery.
Williams will miss his fourth straight game after being already ruled out from playing on Monday. The four-time Pro Bowl selection was hurt when a teammate rolled onto his left leg in a 34-21 loss to Cincinnati.
