A Barberton couple is accused of stealing $2,400 or possibly more from a youth football organization they once headed.

Mark and Rachel Sager, 38 and 34, are the former president and treasurer of Barberton Youth Football League. They’re charged with theft, a fifth-degree felony.

Barberton Police Sgt. Brian Davis said police were first alerted of the theft in September, when the city parks Director Shane McAvinew filed a report. McAvinew said Rachel Sager had admitted to him that she stole $1,700 from the league. They worked out an agreement for her to pay back the money in installments, and in return he would not file charges against her.

The Sagers paid back the money in a couple of months, police said.

“After they paid it back, the parks director hired an accountant to go over the books,” Davis said. “In January of this year, it was discovered that another $3,800 was missing.”

Davis investigated and was able to tie $2,400 of the missing money to the Sagers, who he said used the money to pay personal bills. It’s unclear what happened to he other $1,400, the sergeant said.

Both are free on bond while awaiting trial. Their cases are being heard in Summit County Common Pleas Court.
