A second teenager has been charged in the shooting death of a Kent State University student on Sunday.
Marquis Grier, 17, of Massillon, was being held without bond at the Portage County Juvenile Justice Center on charges of delinquency by way of aggravated murder.
Grier’s alleged accomplice, Ty Kremling, 17, of Stow, faces identical charges. In his case, prosecutors have filed to bump his charges to adult court, a juvenile court spokesperson said. A judge has not yet ruled. Prosecutors are expected to handle Grier’s charges the same way.
The charges resulted from the death of 18-year-old Nick Massa. Massa, who was from Westlake but lived on the Kent State campus, was visiting friends at an off-campus apartment complex on East Main Street in Kent when three young men came to the apartment at about 4:15 p.m. and demanded money, a 911 caller reported.
Massa challenged the robbers when they said they would shoot if the people in the apartment did not cooperate, and one of the robbers fired at him.
Massa died of his wounds while the three young men fled. The shooter was identified as Kremling by one of the occupants of the apartment.
Police questioned two other Stow minors but released them. Two people from outside the Stow area were sought by police. Grier is thought to be one of those people.
Police on Thursday said they could release no other information about the case.
