Akron fire fighters late Thursday battled a major fire at the Shady Hollow Pavilion in Sand Run Metro Park.
The wooden structure off Sand Run Parkway in northwest Akron is a total loss, said officials of Summit Metro Parks.
The two-alarm fire broke out about 11:15 p.m. and it took the Akron Fire Department two hours to bring the flames under control.
The parkway was closed to traffic for several hours.
Bath and Copley fire departments provided water tankers.
The cause of the fire was unclear, authorities said, and no damage figure was released.
A small group had reserved the enclosed log cabin-style pavilion on Thursday and had left by 5 p.m. They had built a small fire in the wood stove. The shelter was then checked by a ranger about 6:30 p.m., said park spokesman Nate Eppink.
The structure at 1750 Sand Run Parkway is insured, he said.
The structure, a rustic cabin, was built in 1988. It about 1,300 square feet and can accommodate up to 40 people. It had central heat, two ceiling fans, indoor rest rooms, a kitchen and fireplace with the stove.
A section of Dogwood Trail that runs by the pavilion will be closed temporarily.
The park district intends to contact those who have future reservations at Shady Hollow to see if alternate accommodations can be arranged, he said.
That will require 120 contacts, he said.
