Buchtel senior Derrick Harvey Jr. has committed to play football on scholarship at Savannah State University.
Harvey, 18, helped guide Buchtel to a 9-2 record this past season. The Griffins went 6-0 in the regular season against City Series foes to win the percentage title and then topped East in the City Series postseason final game.
Harvey contributed as a wide receiver and defensive back for Buchtel coach Ricky Powers.
Harvey said Savannah State intends to play him on offense as a wide receiver.
“The weather is great down there, and the coaches made it feel like home,” Harvey said Monday. “It felt like Buchtel. I felt very comfortable with the staff. They welcomed me in and that gave me a good feeling.”
Harvey is 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds. He has a 2.8 cumulative grade-point average and has seven varsity letters — four in football, two in basketball and one in track and field.
He is on pace for his third letter this winter in basketball and plans to earn a second letter in the spring in track and field.
