Canton K-9 police dog Jethro died Sunday morning after a daylong struggle to recover after he was shot by a burglary suspect.
Social media erupted with support after police announced the dog’s death on Facebook and Twitter.
Police reported Jethro was struck by three rounds while officers responded to a burglary at Fisher Foods on Harrison Avenue Southwest. The canine officer rushed the suspect, who fired at the dog and at police officers.
The officers returned fire and hit the suspect in the leg. He fled but was found hiding nearby. Police said his gunshot wound was not life-threatening.
Jethro was taken to an emergency veterinary clinic and was stable on Saturday afternoon. Among the dog’s injuries was a possibility of brain damage, police said.
On Saturday, police said Jethro was refusing to rest. Veterinarians gave him a sedative, which allowed him to “sleep peacefully.”
At about 9 a.m. Sunday, police posted on Facebook about Jethro’s condition.
“Jethro is still resting,” they said. “Three rounds struck him but none struck vital organs and did not require surgery.”
Just two hours later, though, police said he died.
“It is with heavy hearts that we must tell you all that we lost Jethro,” officers wrote. “He took a sudden turn for the worse and has passed.”
Police said Canton Officer Ryan Davis — Jethro’s handler and partner — stayed with him most of the day Saturday. Several pictures were shared on social media showing Davis comforting his dog.
Thousands of people from across the country mourned Jethro’s loss on social media.
“Heart breaking over Jethro’s loss,” posted Madeleine Tokach, of Arizona. “Knowing he is no longer in pain is a small condolence for his passing.”
Others commended Jethro’s bravery.
“So sorry for the loss of your family member and beloved partner. Praying you feel comfort and God’s love through the heartache,” wrote Leah Walters, of North Canton. “Jethro made the ultimate sacrifice. One that I’m sure many humans would have had to think twice before doing.”
