See mayor take office in Akron

Witness history: In May, Akron swore in its first new mayor in 28 years. Just days later, it happened again. Today we’ll get our fourth mayor in seven months as Dan Horrigan is sworn in at 10 a.m. at Greystone Hall, 103 S. High St. The event is open to the public, though seating is limited.

Start off the new year with a 5K

Start 2016 off right by signing up for Saturday’s “New Year’s Resolution Run” at the Eric Snow YMCA in Canton. The 5K race steps off at 9 a.m.; race day registration and packet pickup begin at 7, or register online today at www.ymcastark.org/esy5k. Registration is $30 in advance for adults, $25 for 12 and under; race day is $40 for all.

First Friday to have ice theme

Canton’s First Friday has a “New Year’s in Ice” theme, with professional ice carving demonstrations and 18 carvings sponsored by downtown businesses, as well as live music and art. It runs 6 to 10 p.m. in downtown Canton. See www.cantonfirstfriday.com.

Last chance to see light display

It’s your last chance to see the Lake Anna Holiday Light Display at the gazebo, 615 W. Park Ave., Barberton. Lights will be turned on at 5 p.m. and remain on until 10 p.m. 330-848-6653.
