The portion of Mogadore Road where last week’s plane crash demolished an apartment building complex has reopened.
The area in the 3000 block of Mogadore Road near Skelton Road was inaccessible after the crash on Tuesday that claimed the life of nine people onboard a chartered corporate jet. A pilot, co-pilot and seven passengers — employees of Florida-based real estate company Pebb Enterprises — were on the jet operated by ExecuFlight, a Florida company.
The plane clipped power lines before crashing through the apartment building. Witnesses saw a huge ball of fire engulfing the building and a volcano of smoke.
National Transportation Safety Board officials said the plane disintegrated on impact.
While the accident scene is still sectioned off with police tape, Ohio State Highway Patrol units and NTSB officials, who are investigating the cause of the crash, have left the site.
The NTSB recovered the jet’s two turbo engines, the landing gear and cockpit voice recorder.
Akron police Lt. Rick Edwards said a private company is sifting through the leftover debris for personal effects.
The apartment building is scheduled to be razed on Thursday. Akron Fire Chief Ed Hiltbrand said razing the building has been delayed because of an EPA safety inspection.
