Hudson prosecutors will decide whether to press charges against an off-duty police officer who accidentally fired a gun into a Cuyahoga Falls day care on Monday.
The officer, 33-year-old Ian McInnes, works part-time for the East Cleveland Police Department and as a volunteer reserve for Cuyahoga Falls. No employment action has been taken against him.
According to reports, McInnes was unloading a 9 mm Glock 19 in his bedroom when it accidentally discharged at about 3:35 p.m. The bullet flew from his home in the 3000 block of State Road and into KinderCare Learning Center, which stands nearby.
No one was injured, but the bullet passed through one wall and lodged in a different one.
Children and caregivers were present when the incident occurred.
Police reported that discharging a weapon in the city is a misdemeanor, but the potential offense is a felony because it occurred in a school zone.
Hudson Solicitor Sara Fagnilli will decide whether charges are appropriate.
Contacted Wednesday, KinderCare’s corporate office in Oregon said parents were notified of the incident.
“We’re just grateful that nobody was hurt,” a spokeswoman said.
