The treasurer of Firestone High School’s Parent, Teacher and Student Association has been charged with stealing more than $6,000 from the organization from December to July.
Stacy Walker, 42, of Harcourt Drive is charged with theft and forgery. Police said she turned herself in Thursday morning and was booked into the Summit County Jail.
According to reports, Walker allegedly forged checks from the association and deposited the money into her own account. The PTSA’s account was audited in late July.
Firestone High School Principal Larry Johnson said while the PTSA is one of the school’s biggest partners, it is not an Akron Public Schools organization.
He said that he is disappointed about the situation but praised the organization for its transparency in informing him of what was going on and for hiring an independent auditor to go over its records.
“While this is unfortunate, it is not something we have any control over,” Johnson said. “My understanding is this young lady has admitted to what she did and has said she will make full restitution.”
Johnson said the expectation is for the school to continue its relationship with the organization.
“I am pleased with the partnership and if full restitution is made, I will be more thrilled,” Johnson said. “I’m an educator, so I believe in second, third and fourth chances.”
Walker could not be reached for comment.
