COPLEY TOWNSHIP

Drug disposal bags coming

COPLEY TWP.: Residents who can’t get to drug disposal drop-off sites could soon receive an alternative — disposal bags donated by the Summit County Community Partnership.

Township Fire Chief Michael Benson said department ambulance crews will have the bags available to residents on regular runs. The partnership received 40,000 donated “drug deactivation pouches” from Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals “for distribution to senior centers, patients, parents, families in Akron and Summit County to provide a safe and responsible drug disposal method, preventing abuse and misuse of leftover prescription medication,” a news release said.

The user-friendly pouches are simple to use, deactivating prescription drugs and making contents safe for landfills. Residents can place the medications in the plastic pouch, add tap water, then seal and throw the pouches away with household trash.

Acme Fresh Market Pharmacy is offering drug disposal pouches throughout their 16 neighborhood locations in Summit County. The statement said the SCCP is partnering with numerous community organizations to distribute pouches including Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority, AUI Cascade Village, the Community Builders of Akron, city of Barberton, Community Health Center, Summit County Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Board, Mature Services Inc., Summa Health, the Summit County Opiate Task Force and Summit County Public Health.
