The candidates for Summit County executive will face off next month in a debate presented by the Akron Press Club.

County Executive Ilene Shapiro, a Democrat, and Republican Bill Roemer will be quizzed by a panel of local journalists Oct. 19 at the University of Akron’s Quaker Station, 135 S. Broadway, Akron.

Doors will open at 11 a.m., with the program starting about noon.

Shapiro, 69, of Akron was appointed to the position in August after County Executive Russ Pry died following complications from colon cancer. She previously served as president of County Council.

She also has worked at FirstMerit Corp. and the Summa Foundation.

Roemer, 58, of Richfield is a retired Ameritech sales director and certified public accountant. He served one term as an at-large county councilman.

The debate is co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters of the Akron Area and the University of Akron’s Ray C. Bliss Institute of Applied Politics.

The cost to attend is $20 for Press Club members and $25 for nonmembers.

To make a reservation, contact Lianne Fowler, the Press Club administrator, at 330-552-8860 or akronpressclub@gmail.com. Cash or check only will be accepted the day of the event.

The cost will be $25 for all reservations received after Oct. 14.
