Akron’s Ellet High School will be closed Monday because of a fire that damaged an area of the building that houses the school’s construction program.
The fire, which happened late Saturday night, is believed to have started in the office of Room 132, which is labeled “Building Maintenance,” according to Mark Williamson, spokesman for the Akron Public Schools District.
The construction program is part of the district’s Career Technical Education curriculum.
Firefighters responded to the building about 11 p.m. Saturday, after the school fire alarm system sent an alert. Upon arrival, they found light smoke filling the hallways, located the fire and extinguished it within an hour, according to Akron Fire Lt. Jeff Schueller.
Because of the size of the building, the fire was elevated to a second alarm, which doubled the response to four fire engines and two ladder trucks, Schueller said. Firefighters also used a system on one of the trucks to ventilate the building before leaving the scene.
The cause of the fire, which resulted in an undetermined amount of damage, is under investigation. No injuries were reported.
