Terrorist acts in Akron

Ohio has recorded 50 incidents meeting the description of a terrorist act since record-keeping began in 1970.

Six have been in the Akron area, the most recent of which was 20 years ago at Firestone Country Club when an unknown device exploded in a trash can during the World Series of Golf. Three were injured, and no one was apprehended.

Below are the Akron incidents gleaned from the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism database. A complete list for the state is on www.Ohio.com, and reports with greater detail are available at the consortium’s website.

Feb. 4, 1970 — Union strikers used an explosive device on private property.

May 4, 1970 — Unknown persons used an explosive device on private property.

Feb. 10, 1971 — A Neo-Nazi group bombed private property.

Nov. 30, 1971 — Left-wing militants used an incendiary device on a military facility.

March 1, 1978 — Anti-abortion activists use an incendiary device on a facility.

Aug. 24, 1996 — Unknown persons used an explosive device on private property. Three were injured.
