Kevin Thompson, an Akron native and PNC regional president, has been chosen as the 2017 H. Peter Burg Award recipient by the local Red Cross.

The Red Cross of Summit, Portage, and Medina counties presents the award each year to one or more individuals who best exemplify leadership in the community, compassion for its people and dedication to the humanitarian mission of the Red Cross.

The award is named for the late H. Peter Burg, former CEO of FirstEnergy and chairman of the local Red Cross board of directors. It is given to a community member who exemplifies Burg’s selfless service to the community and honors his legacy of dedication to community service.

“It is a tremendous honor to receive this award embodying the legacy of the great H. Peter Burg and the impact made by the Red Cross,” Thompson said. “I’m fortunate that every day, I am able to represent PNC and my colleagues in this community, doing work that reflects our culture and dedication to supporting this region.”

Thompson was selected by a committee of past award recipients, and will be honored at the 21st Annual Acts of Courage event on March 2 at the Hilton Akron/Fairlawn.

“I am so pleased to extend this award to Kevin,” said Rachel D’Attoma, executive director for the Red Cross of Summit, Portage and Medina Counties. “His dedication and commitment to the Red Cross and the community truly embody the spirit of H. Peter Burg.”

Thompson is a nearly 40-year-veteran of PNC and its bank predecessors in Akron and has been the president of the nine-county region for nine years.

He is also active in the community. He currently serves as a board member of Leadership Akron, Safety Forces Chaplaincy Center, Tallmadge Community Foundation and the American Red Cross. He volunteered for many years as an instructor of applied economics for Junior Achievement, is a former trustee for the University of Akron, and is currently active with the Leadership Akron Alumni Association and the Greater Akron Chamber.

Thompson and his wife, Carmen, reside in Tallmadge.

The Greater Akron Chamber also has a separate award named in honor of Burg.
