An Akron man is heading to prison for failing to pay child support.
How much does he owe? More than $60,000.
Summit County Common Pleas Court Judge Lynne Callahan sentenced David Godbee, 36, of Douglas Street, to 18 months in prison Wednesday.
Godbee was indicted in September 2014 for failing to pay child support to two women. Since then, he has been charged with drug possession, driving under suspension and failure to report.
Godbee was convicted in January on two counts of non-support of dependents, fourth-degree felonies, and given an 18-month suspended prison sentence. He was ordered to pay about $400 in monthly child support. Though he was working, Godbee failed to pay the required amount, according to a news release from the Summit County Prosecutor’s Office.
“This is a man who never paid a dime in child support even after receiving numerous opportunities to do so,” Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh said in the release. “These families struggle for everything they have and many times desperately need the additional support.”
Walsh said her office is aggressive in tracking down parents who owe more than $5,000 in child support and haven’t paid it in at least six months.
“We work hard to ensure the children receive the support they deserve,” she said.
As of Aug. 31 Godbee owed $62,126.06.
