Brown Mackie College to close West Akron location Oct. 31; ITT Tech halts new enrollments

Brown Mackie College is closing its West Akron location Oct. 31 after failing to renew its lease at 755 White Pond Drive, Beacon Journal news partner NewsNet5 reported.

The privately owned, for-profit college informed students about the closing via email and advised that they could transfer to the college’s Jackson Township location at 4300 Munson St. NW.

Brown Mackie’s parent company, Education Management Corp., has had legal problems in the past.

Just last year, it settled a class action lawsuit in 39 states, including Ohio, where it had to forgive 10 million dollars in student loans.

The state attorney general’s office accused the college of misleading students about graduation rates and the ability to transfer credits.

A spokesperson from the college returned a call from newsnet5.com, but offered little information.

In another development, ITT Technical Institute locations across the country — including the Fairlawn campus at 3428 W. Market St. — announced they are no longer enrolling new students.

The U.S. Department of Education last month banned the troubled for-profit college chain from enrolling new students who use federal financial aid.

The Dayton Daily News and the Associated Press reported last week that ITT has been ordered to pay $152 million to the federal department within 30 days to cover student refunds and other liabilities in case the company closes. The chain, based in Indiana, is still paying another $44 million demanded by the department in June for the same reason.

In April, the University of Akron revealed that it had abandoned talks to partner with ITT for a deal pursued by former President Scott Scarborough that would have expanded the UA brand to campuses across the country.
