The man accused of fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend and her boyfriend in Massillon before attempting to kill himself died Saturday morning.
Shane Varner, 29, of Jackson Township, died at 5:30 a.m. Saturday in Mercy Medical Center’s intensive care unit, the Canton Repository reported Saturday.
Varner shot Tara Clossman, 25, of Akron, and her boyfriend, Michael V. Lovette, 33, of Massillon, Aug. 20 when the two were leaving Lovette’s house in a car.
He then went back to his home where he shot himself, and he had since been hospitalized in critical condition.
Lovette, who was in the driver’s seat, was taken to Affinity Medical Center in Massillon where he was pronounced dead.
Clossman was taken by helicopter to Cleveland Clinic Akron General and died during surgery.
Charges were pending against Varner when he died.
Clossman was a fourth-grade teacher at Voris Community Learning Center and was preparing to start teaching fifth grade at Portage Path Community Learning Center this fall. She was also an instructor and member of the competitive dance team at McCardles Dance Studio in Cuyahoga Falls.
“Our prayers, condolences and deepest sympathy go out to Mike Lovette’s family,” the Clossman family said in a prepared statement. “We are thankful for everyone’s well-wishes, prayers and condolences during this most difficult time.”
