High school roundup: Copley’s Weston Bridges runs for five touchdowns in win over Twinsburg

Weston Bridges rushed for 195 yards and five touchdowns, and the visiting Indians held off a late rally by the Tigers (1-0).

Bridges rushed for three touchdowns in the first quarter and one in the second quarter to give the Indians a 28-7 halftime lead.

The Tigers rallied with two touchdowns in the third quarter and trailed 28-21 before Bridges rushed for his fifth score of the game in the fourth quarter to put the game away.

Jalen Tucker threw for 244 yards and two touchdowns for the Tigers.

The host Black Tigers (1-0) scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to break a scoreless tie to defeat the Rough Riders (0-1) for their first win since 2014.

Nate Vassalotti threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Gibson with 4:49 remaining and Jordan Bosley had a 28-yard touchdown run. The Black Tigers’ last win was Oct. 24, 2014, over Brush.

Callahan had a 5-yard touchdown run, Parker scored on a 10-yard run and Grant Gonya kicked a 41-yard field goal to lead the Explorers.

Kyle Vantrease threw for 233 yards and a touchdown and rushed for two touchdowns, and Joe Gobble rushed for four touchdowns for visiting Stow (1-0) in a win over Green (0-1).

Senior Robert Staudt threw for 248 yards and three touchdowns, and senior Jeremy McAleese rushed for 176 yards and two touchdowns for Green.

Lake 17, Garfield 0

Senior Zach Sturmi caught a touchdown pass and returned an interception 101 yards for a touchdown to tie a school record and lead the host Blue Streaks (1-0) over the Golden Rams (0-1).

Sturmi’s interception return of 101 yards tied Shannon Shrock’s record set in 1993 against North Canton Hoover.

Donte Taylor threw three touchdown passes and rushed for another, and the host Fighting Irish (1-0) defeated the Falcons (0-1).

Taylor threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Leonard Young and connected with Malik Wooldridge for two touchdowns. Taylor completed 14-of-24 passes for 214 yards and threw two interceptions.

Terrence Keyes had a 12-yard touchdown run, and Justin Sampson returned an interception for a touchdown for the Irish.

Barberton 34, Norton 6

Junior Garrett Turnbaugh caught two touchdown passes and had a 35-yard touchdown run for the host Magics (1-0) in a win over the Panthers (0-1). Turnbaugh caught eight passes for 154 yards, and junior quarterback Zane Ries completed 14-of-28 passes for 236 yards and three touchdowns.

King Alfred Sanders rushed for two touchdowns and returned a kickoff 84 yards for a touchdown for the visiting Bulldogs.
