Second suspect in Cuyahoga Valley National Park shooting arrested after cellphone connects him to crime

FBI agents say they have arrested the man who last month drove a woman to Cuyahoga Valley National Park, where a friend attempted to kill her with three gunshots to the head.

Raymond Moore III, 27, of Ellsworth Drive, was arrested Thursday and charged with aiding and abetting an attempted murder and the discharge of a firearm in relation to a crime of violence.

He’s accused of being the getaway driver for DeZay “Scrap” Ely, 27, who allegedly shot the 18-year-old woman over July 4 weekend. The woman, who the Beacon Journal is not identifying for her safety, was found near death by hikers along a trail close to Akron-Peninsula and Northampton roads in Boston Township.

The FBI identified Moore — who the victim knew only as “Ray” — by combining clues given by a variety of sources.

The victim told agents Ely used her phone to call Moore sometimes, Ely was connected to Moore on social media accounts, and a relative of Moore’s provided his phone number to the FBI. The phone number provided matched records of the victim’s phone.

A motive in the shooting is unclear. The woman had been staying with Ely, and Ely was said to be angry with her the night before the shooting. FBI agents declined to elaborate.
