• The Browns suspended cornerback K’Waun Williams for two weeks and fined him for a violation of team rules. NFL Network reported the fine is worth one game check. In Williams’ case, it would be $35,294. Williams may choose to appeal.
• The team and Williams are clearly not on the same page about whether he has an injured ankle, and the dispute has gotten ugly. Williams missed Friday’s 17-11 preseason-opening loss to the Green Bay Packers and was absent from the past three practices. The team has cited a personal reason for his absence.
• One person familiar with the situation said Williams left Green Bay claiming he would retire, then returned to the Browns the next day and said his ankle was injured. Williams never mentioned an ankle injury before the exhibition opener and had practiced without limitation leading up to it, the person said.
• Another source said Williams is seeking a second medical opinion on his ankle and has an appointment scheduled for 5 p.m. Wednesday.
• Before the Browns suspended Williams, coach Hue Jackson was asked whether Williams’ absence was excused or unexcused. “We’ll talk about that at a different time,” Jackson replied. “I just think there are a lot of mixed messages that are going on as far as all that’s concerned. I think we’ll deal with it, and I’m sure we’ll all talk about it at the appropriate time.”
• Williams had been the team’s primary nickel cornerback for the past two seasons, but draft day trade acquisition Jamar Taylor has filled the role during camp. Williams’ future with the Browns is in jeopardy.
• Cleveland.com reported starting quarterback Robert Griffin III has been separated from his wife of three years, Rebecca Liddicoat, for the past several months and is in the process of filing for divorce. They had a daughter last year.
• Wide receiver Josh Gordon participated in some team drills with the first-team offense after being limited to individual drills Monday in his first practice since Dec. 26, 2014. “[He looked] fast, long, tall, big, can catch, all those good things,” Jackson said. “He’s done a good job. We’re just working our process with him, and we’ll get him out there and doing more as we move forward.” Jackson has said Gordon probably won’t play in Thursday night’s preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons.
• Rookie Emmanuel Ogbah worked at outside linebacker with the first-team defense in place of Nate Orchard.
• Nose tackle Danny Shelton and offensive lineman Kaleb Johnson fought after a play. They tussled for a few moments, Shelton bear-hugged Johnson, slammed him on the ground and continued to go after him. After they were separated, Jackson pulled them together to reprimand them. “I’m not interested in fights,” Jackson said. “I’m interested in good football players. I know things get heated a little bit every now and then, but we have to keep our cool, keep our poise.”
• Griffin completed two touchdown passes to wide receiver Terrelle Pryor in an 11-on-11 red-zone drill. Pryor caught passes over cornerbacks Eric Patterson and Charles Gaines.
• Safety Derrick Kindred cut in front of tight end E.J. Bibbs and intercepted a pass from quarterback Cody Kessler. Later, inside linebacker Tank Carder intercepted a Kessler pass.
• Wide receiver Rannell Hall reverted to the team’s injured reserve list after being waived/injured with a fractured fibula he suffered in the preseason opener.
• Johnson left practice with the medical staff while closing his right eye. Wide receiver Dennis Parks (knee) also exited practice early.
Other injuries: Left tackle Joe Thomas (back), quarterback Austin Davis (concussion), wide receivers Andrew Hawkins and Ricardo Louis (hamstrings), running back Glenn Winston (shoulder), cornerback Trey Caldwell (hamstring) and defensive lineman Nile Lawrence-Stample (shoulder) didn’t practice.
