FAIRFIELD: Family and friends of an Ohio woman last seen alive five years ago were marking her birthday Tuesday by watching a documentary about her unsolved disappearance and slaying.
The hourlong Taken Too Soon: The Katelyn Markham Story was scheduled for a Tuesday evening special show at a theater near Markham’s hometown of Fairfield, a northern Cincinnati suburb. She would have turned 27 Tuesday.
Markham vanished from her home Aug. 13, 2011. After extensive searches, her remains were found nearly two years later in a wooded area in Indiana, some 25 miles away. A coroner ruled the cause of a death as a homicide, but little other information is known.
Authorities say they will continue to investigate any possible leads in the case.
The Hamilton-Middletown Journal-News reports that a victims’ advocacy group hired Georgetown, Ky.-based Remix Films for the documentary.
“We want people to see the film because it might trigger someone’s memory of the evening of the disappearance,” filmmaker Michael Crisp said. “They might know something that they’re keeping and have kept for several years, so that’s really our goal.”
The Indiana State Police, Fairfield police, Butler County Sheriff’s Office and private investigators have been working the case.
Hundreds of volunteers had helped police and professional search teams scour nearby woods, waterways and rural areas for any sign of Markham, and the case was featured on national television shows.
Her cellphone vanished with her and was apparently turned off shortly after she went missing.
