Monday’s developments
• Rookie wide receiver Corey Coleman practiced for the first time since Aug. 5 and participated in team drills. It’s a sign he may make his NFL preseason debut when the Browns host the Atlanta Falcons at 8 p.m. Thursday. His status for the game will depend on how his left hamstring responds. The muscle kept the first-round draft pick sidelined for five practices.
• “We’ll see,” coach Hue Jackson said when asked if Coleman will play Thursday. “Today was another opportunity for him to get out there finally and catch balls, run around. We’ll see how he feels after today, and then we’ll determine that as we move forward.”
• Parma Heights native Jamie Meder practiced at right end with the starting defense, supplanting Xavier Cooper. Meder had spent the first 12 practices of camp as the No. 2 nose tackle. He compiled four tackles, a quarterback hit and a safety Friday in a 17-11 preseason-opening loss to the Green Bay Packers.
• “He deserves it,” Jackson said of Meder. “Jamie played extremely well last week. He’s very valuable to us. I don’t know if [his promotion] was just because of that. We put a lot of people in a lot of different positions to give them opportunities, and he’s very deserving. He’s really tough. He’s strong. He knocks people back and he pursues.”
• An injury-riddled receiving corps suddenly appears to be in much better shape. In addition to Coleman returning, the oft-suspended Josh Gordon (quadriceps) practiced for the first time since late 2014. Marlon Moore and rookie Rashard Higgins participated in team drills after being limited Sunday. Terrelle Pryor continued to practice with a sore hand. Jackson was encouraged. “Guys need to practice,” he said. “That’s the only way you’re going to get better as a football team.”
• Wide receivers Andrew Hawkins and Ricardo Louis (hamstrings) were sidelined. Hawkins said he’s not too far away from returning.
• The Browns held their final practice open to the public, drawing 2,011 fans. Their eight open practices this summer in Berea combined for an announced attendance of 17,993.
Other injuries: Quarterback Austin Davis (concussion), running back Glenn Winston (shoulder), cornerbacks Trey Caldwell (hamstring) and K’Waun Williams (personal reason), defensive linemen Nile Lawrence-Stample (shoulder) and John Hughes (personal reason) and left tackle Joe Thomas (back) didn’t practice.
