Wednesday’s developments
• Browns rookie tight end Seth DeValve was activated from the physically unable to perform list and practiced for the first time since training camp started July 29. He was limited to individual drills during the slow-paced practice. A fourth-round draft pick from Princeton University, DeValve suffered a pulled hamstring while running a route during a spring practice and had been sidelined for weeks.
• “It’s very hard to watch. Unfortunately, I’ve been a spectator for much of my time here so far,” DeValve said. “It’s something you’ve got to be patient with. ... It was minor, but it’s been recurring, so I had to take the time to get it healthy.”
• DeValve is expected to sit out Friday’s preseason opener on the road against the Green Bay Packers. But coach Hue Jackson is eager to increase DeValve’s workload in upcoming practices. With DeValve idle, Connor Hamlett has made a strong case for himself to become the No. 2 tight end opposite Pro Bowler Gary Barnidge.
• “If he’s healthy, he’s a tremendous athlete, so he has a chance just like anybody else,” Jackson said of DeValve. “But I think he’ll hopefully get back out here pretty soon so that we can evaluate him. We haven’t seen much of him, and he needs to be out there with his teammates practicing.”
• Two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Joe Haden participated in a seven-on-seven drill for the first time during camp. Haden had left ankle surgery March 16 and didn’t begin practicing again until Monday. He rested Tuesday.
• Offensive lineman Austin Pasztor practiced as the first-team right tackle for the third consecutive practice, so he’s expected to start against the Packers.
• Thunderstorms forced the Browns to move practice into their field house and close the session to the public. After the skies had cleared about an hour later, Jackson moved practice outdoors. “It was muddy and [there were] water puddles and wet balls and the whole nine yards,” Jackson said. “So I kind of like it like that when it’s hard because football is hard.”
• Wide receiver Terrelle Pryor (right calf) stopped practicing early.
• Defensive end John Hughes missed his seventh consecutive practice because of a personal matter.
Other injuries: Receivers Josh Gordon (quadriceps), Andrew Hawkins (hamstring), Corey Coleman (hamstring) and Dennis Parks (shoulder), cornerback Trey Caldwell (hamstring) and defensive lineman Nile Lawrence-Stample (shoulder) didn’t practice.
Thursday’s schedule: The Browns will travel to Green Bay. They’ll face the Packers at 8 p.m. Friday.
