Monday’s developments

• The Browns activated two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Joe Haden from the physically unable to perform list, and he practiced for the first time since training camp started. He participated in individual drills, but not team drills. Haden had left ankle surgery March 16 and had been rehabilitating.

• Haden wants to play in the preseason to knock some rust off, but he’s not expected to appear in Friday’s exhibition opener at the Green Bay Packers. He’s vowed to be ready for the regular-season opener Sept. 11 at the Philadelphia Eagles. “If they let me play in the preseason, that would be sweet,” he said. “But my main goal is to get back by Sept. 11.”

• Coach Hue Jackson said the team would limit Haden for a while and “ease him back into” the action. “It’s just great to have him back out there in a uniform and bouncing around,” Jackson said. “I’m excited about him being out there. He’s one of our better defensive players and one of the better players in the league. To get him back gives our whole defense a jolt. We’re going to take our time and make sure he is totally right.”

• Haden’s teammates were upbeat about his return. “It’s just that sense of security, just knowing that 10 yards back you’ve got a dominant player,” nose tackle Danny Shelton said.

• So when will wide receiver Josh Gordon (quadriceps) practice for the first time in this camp? “Hopefully soon,” Jackson replied.

• Gordon needs to lose weight, too. “He’ll be the first to tell you that. He does. We’re working through that process, too,” Jackson said. “… I think you can see he is into practice. The guy carries a script with him everywhere he goes. He’s making sure that he’s staying in it the best he can. When he walks back out there, I think he has something to prove too. It’s good to have a guy with a chip on his shoulder.”

• Defensive end John Hughes missed his fifth consecutive practice, and Jackson’s answer about whether Hughes would return soon was rather ominous. “It’s still a personal matter,” Jackson said. “I think at some point in time, we’ll have an opportunity to talk about it, but it’s just a personal matter right now.”

• The Browns signed defensive lineman Chigbo Anunoby and waived undrafted rookie D-lineman Kyle Rose, who had been dealing with a hamstring injury. Anunoby entered the NFL in 2012 and has spent time on the practice squads of Indianapolis, Washington and Tennessee.

• Center Cameron Erving (elbow) and fullback Malcolm Johnson (concussion) returned to practice but didn’t participate in team drills.

• Tight end Randall Telfer (knee) returned to practice.

• Cornerback K’Waun Williams intercepted a pass from quarterback Robert Griffin III in a drill pitting receivers against defensive backs.

• John Greco and Alvin Bailey rotated at first-team right guard. Greco recently returned from a hamstring injury.

• Rookie outside linebacker Joe Schobert batted down a pass from Griffin and nearly intercepted another but dropped the ball.

• Travis Coons made just 3-of-6 field goals, and fellow kicker Patrick Murray made all four of his attempts at the end of practice.

Other injuries: Wide receivers Andrew Hawkins (hamstring) and Corey Coleman (hamstring), cornerback Trey Caldwell (hamstring), defensive lineman Nile Lawrence-Stample (shoulder) and tight end Seth DeValve (hamstring) didn’t practice.

Tuesday’s schedule: Practice from 3:15-5:45 p.m.
