Saturday’s developments
• A day after rookie wide receiver Corey Coleman stole the spotlight during a live scrimmage in Berea by catching four passes and a touchdown, he stood on the sideline at Ohio Stadium with ice strapped to his left hamstring. Coleman participated in simulated pregame warm-ups before the Orange and Brown Scrimmage in Columbus. But when the team returned from the locker room, he had his leg wrapped and didn’t practice.
• “He’ll be fine,” coach Hue Jackson said of Coleman, a first-round draft pick. “He just had a little hamstring issue, and I just didn’t want to push it too far. We’re too close to getting ready for the season. He could have been out here if I wanted him to. It’s important to take care of our players and protect them that way.”
• Center Cameron Erving (elbow) was sidelined for the third practice in a row. “Cam will be back very soon,” Jackson said.
• Starting right guard John Greco participated in team drills for the first time since camp began. Greco, who missed time earlier in camp with a hamstring injury, practiced snapping the ball with the centers during the simulated pregame warm-ups.
• Patrick Murray made a 43-yard field goal. Travis Coons made field goals of 31 and 35 yards.
• Defensive back Tracy Howard intercepted a pass from quarterback Josh McCown, who was in the midst of a brief appearance with the first-team offense.
• Defensive back Pierre Desir broke up quarterback Austin Davis’ pass intended for wide receiver Rashard Higgins in the front left corner of the end zone.
• Jackson rehearsed his game-day procedures to familiarize the players with them. The team went through pregame warm-ups, a coin toss and halftime.
• Agent Drew Rosenhaus chatted with owner Jimmy Haslam on the field during practice.
• Fullback Malcolm Johnson (concussion) continued to sit out, but he watched from the sideline. He hadn’t been on the field during the previous practices he missed.
• Defensive end John Hughes missed his fourth consecutive practice because of a personal matter.
• Left tackle Joe Thomas and cornerback Tramon Williams rested during practice. Dan France filled in for Thomas with the starters, and Charles Gaines took Williams’ spot with the first-team defense.
• Other injuries: Receivers Josh Gordon (quadriceps) and Andrew Hawkins (hamstring), cornerbacks Joe Haden (ankle) and Trey Caldwell (hamstring), defensive linemen Kyle Rose (hamstring) and Nile Lawrence-Stample (shoulder) and tight ends Randall Telfer (knee) and Seth DeValve (hamstring) sat out.
• Sunday’s schedule: The Browns are off. Their next practice is scheduled to run from 3:15-5:45 p.m. Monday at team headquarters in Berea.
