Summit County Council President Ilene Shapiro announced she’s interested in running for Summit County executive after current Executive Russ Pry pulled his name out of the race Friday.
Pry, 58, has been in the hospital several weeks and has decided to focus on recovering from his health issues.
“We are all heartsick over Russ’ decision, and yes, I am in the race. I do intend to run for county executive,” Shapiro said Saturday.
The Democrats were looking for a candidate to run against Republican candidate Bill Roemer in November’s election after Pry dropped out.
Shapiro, a Democrat, has served as County Council president and an at-large County Council member the past three years. She has served on various committees, including as chair of the planning and economic development committee for seven years.
Shapiro has a background in business and currently heads Shapiro Consulting Firm. She is a recipient of the U.S. Small Business Administration Women’s Business Advocate for the State of Ohio and the Judith A. Resnick Woman of the Year Award for Inspiration.
The Summit County Democratic Party will choose its replacement candidate at 7 p.m. Aug. 11 in the North High School auditorium, 985 Gorge Blvd.
Pry was admitted into Cleveland Clinic Akron General in June for colon cancer, and then readmitted in early July to repair a tear in his small intestine.
He was expected to return to work Saturday, but his stay in the hospital has been prolonged and officials are unsure when he will return to work. He will serve as Summit County executive until his term ends Dec. 31.
