Beacon Journal staff report
The National Park Service is replacing six railroad crossings along the Valley Railway, between Peninsula and Akron, and traffic detours will be posted.
The closings — beginning Monday and running through Sept. 16 — involve crossings used by the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad.
The Smith Road crossing in northwest Akron will be the first to be replaced, with work running from Monday through Aug. 5.
Smith Road will be closed at that site.
The city of Akron will reopen a portion of nearby Riverview Road — currently closed by the city of Akron for a sewer project — to accommodate traffic.
Here is a list of affected railroad crossings and dates that traffic will be detoured.
• Smith Road crossing, Aug. 1-5
• Walnut Street crossing, Aug. 8-12
• Everett Road crossing, Aug. 15-19.
• Crossing at entrance to Lock 29 parking lot of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park , Aug. 22-26
• Crossing at entrance to Lock 29 overflow parking, Aug. 29-Sept. 2.
• Crossing at Summit County Metro Park maintenance facility off Riverview Road, Sept. 12-16
Detour routes for Smith, and Everett roads and Walnut Street will be posted, providing advanced warning to motorists.
Work at Lock 29 parking lots will be done so that one parking lot will remain open at all times. The Towpath Trail and Peninsula Depot will remain open during construction.
