A Cuyahoga Falls police officer is recovering after a man purposely crashed into his cruiser during a pursuit on Broad Boulevard early Saturday morning, according to reports.

Officer Ted Davis and his alleged attacker were transported to area hospitals. Davis, an 11-year veteran of the force, remains at Summa Akron City Hospital.

His condition has not been released, but none of the injuries sustained in the crash are life-threatening, police said. A family member posted on Facebook that he underwent surgery and will have a long road to recovery.

Police Chief Jack Davis would not say if the suspect remains in the hospital, but said the law department would wait until his “medical issues” are resolved before filing charges. His identity has not been released, although police believe him to be from Akron.

Chief Davis said a man called the police department around 1:20 a.m. Saturday morning and started yelling just moments prior to the incident.

“It’s hard to make out. It’s a guy just going off and it doesn’t make a lot of sense,” Davis said.

Moments after the phone call, the suspect crashed a vehicle into three parked cruisers shortly after 1 a.m. at the police department before fleeing. When police pursued, the driver crashed a vehicle into a cruiser driven by officer Davis.

Chief Davis said his department doesn’t “have a history with this guy” and authorities are unclear of the motive.

Beacon Journal news partner WEWS is reporting that the suspect is also accused of setting a house on fire in Akron.

The investigation is ongoing.

Beach Boyz Entertainment of Cuyahoga Falls posted on Facebook that Ted Davis was one of its former disc jockeys and asked for prayers.

Falls resident Zach Myers also posted that he was collecting donations from area individuals and businesses to put in a “Blessings Basket” to be delivered to the police department for the injured officer.
