Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan has re-established the city’s Senior Citizens Commission, which has been inactive for nearly a decade. Nearly 13 percent of Akron’s population is age 65 or older, according to the 2010 census.

“As this segment of the population grows in our city, and across the country, I believe it is important to have representatives of their community share with us first-hand their needs and how we can effectively meet them,” said Terry Albanese, assistant to the mayor on education, health and family issues.

Akron City Council members this week approved appointments of 10 people to the commission — five residents who are at least 60 and five representatives of agencies involved in providing services to older adults in the city. The following people were appointed to staggered terms:

• Ken Harmon, Akron resident, East Akron.

• Brenna Herman, Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority.

• Karen Hrdlicka, Mature Services.

• Francis Ladd, Summit County Job and Family Services.

• Myoshi Levy, Akron resident, Summit Lake.

• Tom Nikola, Akron resident, Firestone Park.

• Jim Perge, Akron resident, North Hill.

• Susan Sigman, Direction Home/Area Agency on Aging.

• Harvey Sterns, Akron resident, West Akron.

• Connie Swain, Summit County Probate Court.
