Summit County Executive Russ Pry is in Cleveland Clinic Akron General recovering from surgery this week to repair a tear in his small intestine.

He will be at the hospital for several days, Jason Dodson, Pry’s chief of staff, said Friday morning.

The county had announced last month that Pry, 58, had colon cancer and he underwent laparoscopic surgery.

He had been off work while he recovers from that operation when the second surgery was performed.

Dodson, who has been in charge of the day-to-day operation of the county in Pry’s absence, said the tear in Pry’s small intestine was unrelated to the cancer, but was likely aggravated by stress.

“Everything is good,” Dodson said.

Pry was taken to the hospital Tuesday and had surgery Wednesday.

He was listed in serious but stable condition Friday, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

The colon cancer had been discovered during a routine colonoscopy, and the Democratic county executive is expected to make a full recovery, officials have said.

Pry is still expected to return full time to his job in the first week of August, Dodson said.

He has been Summit County executive since July 2007, when he was appointed to the position to replace James McCarthy.
