After striking a woman with a shovel and trying to stab a man with a knife, a 50-year-old North Akron man suddenly collapsed in the street and later died Wednesday night.
Police arrived to the bizarre scene shortly after 10:30 p.m. to find the North Akron man lying in the road at North Main and Dalton streets. He still held the knife, and police told him to discard the weapon before they approached.
He complied and was handcuffed as paramedics examined him.
Paramedics reported the man’s vital signs began worsening, and he was transported to a nearby hospital where he died.
The man did not appear to be injured, according to the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Police reported the 49-year-old man and 39-year-old woman involved in the incident appear to be victims, but an investigation is ongoing.
The man and woman told police they were arguing with the man when he attacked them. The woman was transported to a hospital for her head injury.
The medical examiner’s office will investigate to determine whether the man’s death was the result of a medical issue or foul play. His name will be released after his family is notified.
