Police say a would-be robber attempted to shoot an Akron police officer Tuesday but was foiled when his gun didn’t work.

A 47-year-old man told police he was walking at about noon Tuesday near the intersection of Ada Avenue and Reed Avenue when a man on a bicycle approached.

The man brandished a handgun and said, “Give ...”

The victim, however, ran away and called police, according to the police department’s daily log.

Police broadcast a description of the suspect and officers spotted him, still on his bicycle, in the area of Rosemary Square. As an officer approached, the suspect pulled out a handgun and shot at the officer.

The gun, however, didn’t fire. A chase ensued and a police K-9 caught the suspect on Kelly Avenue.

Javon Spells, 20, of Barberton, was charged with felonious assault on an officer, weapons under disability, carrying a concealed weapon and assault on a police K-9.

During his interview, police say, Spells admitted that he pointed and shot the gun at the officer.

The gun was in his pocket and had been fired, according to the daily log.
