The entire central interchange in Akron was flooded Thursday because of heavy rains, and all entrance and exit ramps were briefly closed.

The interchange reopened by 2:50 p.m., before rush-hour traffic, according to traffic on the police scanner.

Akron police officers rerouted traffic away from the central interchange, where interstates 77 and 76 and state Route 8 converge.

Dispatch said they couldn’t keep up with the phone calls of road closings.

Police said callers were reporting that cars were floating.

Akron city tweeted shortly after 3 p.m.: “Due to the heavy rain, we’ve got some downed trees and displaced manhole covers. Crews dispatched, but please be careful out there!”

Bath Township police reopened a section of North Cleveland-Massillon Road on Thursday afternoon that had been closed earlier in the day.

The University of Akron’s Summer Symphonic Band Concert, scheduled for Thursday evening at Lock 3 Park in downtown Akron, was canceled.
