Summit County Executive Russ Pry’s colon cancer surgery was successful and he is hoping to go home soon, his chief of staff said Thursday.

Pry, 58, underwent surgery Tuesday to remove a cancerous tumor in his colon at Cleveland Clinic Akron General. Pry’s office announced Monday that he was diagnosed the previous week after a routine exam. Testing indicated the tumor had not spread beyond Pry’s colon and is not at an advanced stage. Further testing was needed to determine whether further treatment is necessary.

“Surgery went well and he is going through the recovery process,” Pry’s Chief of Staff Jason Dodson said on Thursday. “He should be out [Thursday or Friday].”

No further information was available.

Pry used his diagnosis to stress the importance of colon screening and early detection.

He is expected to spend six weeks recovering and is expected to return to work when the Summit County Council returns from summer recess on Aug 1. He will be available for consultation with the office, if needed, Dodson said.
