A former city councilman and clerk of courts faces a felony charge after Akron police say they caught him with prescription amphetamine pills that did not belong to him.

Andy Padrutt, 35, is charged with drug abuse, a fifth-degree felony. He also faces misdemeanor charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

Padrutt was a Green councilman-at-large from 2000 to 2007 and was Barberton’s clerk of courts in 2009. He also was executive director of the Summit County Democratic Party from 2002 to 2004.

Akron officers say they found Padrutt asleep in his car parked on North Howard Street just south of East Tallmadge Avenue at 1:30 a.m. May 26.

Police reports say Padrutt appeared to be intoxicated and the car was running while he slept.

Officers found two amphetamine pills without a prescription on Padrutt.

The pills are stimulants often used in the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, narcolepsy and fatigue. Padrutt was arrested and police say he refused to take a breath test to determine whether he was drunk.

Padrutt pleaded not guilty on May 27 and is awaiting trial.

He is being represented by attorney Alan Medvick, who could not be reached for comment.
