1 Akron Ward 1 Councilman Rich Swirsky and Highland Square neighborhood residents thanked Akron firefighters and police officers and patrons and workers at Annabell’s for their life-saving actions during a May 17 South Highland Avenue apartment building fire. One man was rescued after being trapped in an apartment for an hour. Cards created by two neighborhood artists and signed by about 90 residents and business patrons were given to the rescuers on Saturday.
2 The St. Sebastian Parish Foundation awarded $9,000 in scholarships for the 2016-17 academic school year. The scholarships were awarded to: BSA Troop 96 Scholarship, Andrew Powell; Frances L. Sharp and St. Irene scholarships, Sydney Borges; Dayspring Opportunity Scholarship, Claire Kinkelaar and Suzana Borges; Gerstenmaier Family Scholarship, Katie Horgan and George Zografakis; GOAL Scholarship, Nicholas Senko, Claire Kinkelaar, Mia Ross and Megan Williams; and St. Anthony Scholarship, Megan Williams, Cassia Chivers, Tyler Fram and Lola Hall.
3 Katie Scheutzow, a seventh-grader at Saint Ambrose Catholic School, placed second in the National Invention Convention in Washington, D.C. She received her award based on her Banking for the Blind coding project. She also won the award in the financial category.
4 Bob and Regina Cooper of Bath received the third annual Stewart’s Caring Place Spirit Award.
5 Last month, 41 men and one woman participated in the fifth annual Diva Day second-hand and consignment bus trip to benefit the GriefCare Place in Stow. Sandy Herring of Western Reserve Tours served as auctioneer at the dinner, held at Giant Eagle Market District in Cuyahoga Falls. The event raised $1,700 for the GriefCare Place.
6 Rochelle D. Sibbio, president and CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Summit County, has been elected to serve a member of the Habitat for Humanity International U.S. Council. She will chair the affiliate enhancement committee. The council has presidents and executive directors from affiliates nationwide and is charged with creating and implementing policy, procedures and programming for all U.S. operations.
7 Copley High School’s quiz bowl team placed 53rd out of 272 teams competing in the National Academic Quiz Tournament in Dallas over the Memorial Day weekend. The Copley team consists of seniors Will Gao and Zach Varley, junior Kevin Du and sophomores Tommy Varley and Srikar Dudipala. Tommy Varley was the team’s highest scorer. The team was accompanied by coaches Sue Korosa and Melissa Lopez.
8 The Barberton Rotary Club presented officer Marty Eberhart the 2016 Rotary Service Provider Appreciation Award. Eberhart was nominated by the police chief.
