More than 2,500 runners participated in the Girls on the Run Northeast Ohio 5K on May 22 in downtown Akron. “Without the assistance of the city, it would not have been possible for over 2,500 smiling faces to cross the finish line at Lock 3 Park,” Executive Director Robyn Cutler said. “Everyone from the mayor and his cabinet to the police and maintenance workers at Lock 3 Park were vital to a smooth race day.” Girls on the Run is a national program that combines talking with track. During each 10-week session, girls ages 8 through 11 train for a 5K race while also addressing their emotional, social, mental, spiritual and physical development.
Sean Merideth, a junior at Ellet High School, achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.
Highland Robotics Team 2603 competed at the State Championship at Worthington Kilbourne High School and was part of the winning alliance. The team, which consists of 30 students, is advised by Highland High School teachers Andrew Bruening and Andrew Hoslar and mentored by several parents.

Summit County Clerk of Courts Sandra Kurt announced her office donated over $3,000 this year to three local nonprofit organizations, Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank, Akron Summit Community Action and the Battered Women’s Shelter of Summit and Medina Counties. The funds were raised through a voluntary charity drive that permitted staff to dress casually on Fridays in exchange for their contributions.
Maximilian J. Chmura of St. Vincent-St. Mary High School was presented a Governor’s Award for Excellence in Environmental Protection Research by the Ohio EPA at State Science Day at Ohio State University.
Stark State College student Rebecca Race of New Franklin is among 135 students from colleges and universities nationwide selected as delegates to College Debate 2016. Race and the other delegates will lead a national conversation around the key issues that resonate with younger voters.
Highland High School seniors Hunter Meacham and Sarah Welton were selected as the Medina County Kiwanis May Students of the Month by a panel of their peers. Meacham, the son of Mark and Lisa Meacham, plans to attend Miami University for zoology or business. Welton, daughter of Dana and Brian Welton, plans to attend a university for a degree in integrated language arts education.
Randy B. Reed was named a 2016 10 Best in Ohio Chiropractors for Client Satisfaction by the American Institute of Chiropractors.
Meals on Wheels of Stark & Wayne Counties celebrated the 100th birthday of Wanda Goodnight with a birthday cake. Goodnight has been a Meals on Wheels client for two years.
Katelyn Chmura, a student at Seton Catholic School in Hudson, was the grand prize winner in an elementary school poster slogan contest by Summit County Children Services as part of its 2016 Child & Family Awareness Month Creative Contests. Frederick Turner of Akron Summit Community Action Inc. Wooster Head Start Development Center won first place in the preschool collage contest. Fayer Chen of St. Joseph School in Cuyahoga Falls placed first in the middle school storybook contest. Miranda Herberle of St. Joseph School finished first in the middle school public announcement contest.

John “Ed” Duvall Jr. Detective of the Year Award was presented to Detective Dalvin Horton of the Akron Police Department. The Duvall Outstanding Service Award was presented to Donna Abbott of the Akron Children’s Hospital CARE Center. Bernett Williams, vice president of external affairs at Akron Children’s Hospital, was presented the Community Leadership Award. Akron Public School were awarded the Community Partner Award. Community Volunteer Awards were presented to Jackie Summers and Chris Wasson. Corporate Support Award recipients were KC’s Third Base Sports Bar in Akron, Jo-Ann Fabric & Craft Stores in Hudson, Goldman & Rosen Ltd. in Akron, Unitarian Universalist Church of Akron, ABT (Akron Baptist Temple), Stow Blanketeers and Gleaner Summit Arbor #765.
