ASHTABULA, OHIO: Authorities say a freight train fatally struck a 14-year-old boy who was wearing earphones while walking along railroad tracks in far northeastern Ohio.
They say the boy was struck around 9 a.m. Wednesday along Norfolk Southern tracks in Saybrook Township, near Ashtabula.
An Ashtabula County coroner’s investigator tells the Star-Beacon newspaper that the boy apparently was listening to music and showed no response when the whistle was blown on the train approaching behind him. Investigator Tom Despenes says the crew onboard tried to stop the train using emergency brakes, but the teenager was struck and thrown to the side of the tracks.
He was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
