Reminderville, Macedonia, Kent and Montville Township are the area’s new boom towns. Relatively speaking.
Meanwhile, Akron, Canton and Cuyahoga Falls are losing population.
The U.S. Census Bureau released new population estimates Thursday of all cities, villages and townships.
In the five-county Akron area, Reminderville, a village in northeast Summit County, is growing at the fastest rate.
Its population has increased by 16.8 percent or 572 people since the 2010 Census. The population now stands at 3,976.
Macedonia grew by 498 people or 4.5 percent to 11,686. The population in Kent grew by 906 people or 3.1 percent to 29,810. And Montville Township in Medina County grew by 530 people or 4.7 percent to 11,715.
Jeff Brandon, chairman of Montville’s board of trustees, wasn’t surprised more people are calling the township home.
“Montville is a great place to live and do business,” he said. “It’s a comfortable commute to Akron and Cleveland with state Route 18 and I-71. We have three wonderful newer parks ... It’s a great place to raise a family.”
Bigger cities didn’t fare so well, though.
Akron has lost 1,568 people since the census and the population now stands at 197,542.
Akron has plenty of company among its big city peers in Ohio. Cleveland, Dayton, Toledo and Youngstown have all seen population declines.
Only Cincinnati and Columbus have experienced gains.
Akron planning director Jason Segedy has announced an aggressive goal to boost the city’s population back over 200,000 by 2020 and to 250,000 by 2050.
Segedy couldn’t be reached for comment.
Canton’s population has fallen by 1,122 people or 1.5 percent to 71,885. And Cuyahoga Falls has seen its population dip by 506 people or 1 percent to 49,146.
