Warehouse store giant Costco is opening its store in Boston Heights on June 22.
Costco — whose stores offer everything from groceries to clothing, appliances and garage doors — quietly opened a temporary location Wednesday at the Macedonia Commons shopping center where people can sign up for memberships, a Costco spokeswoman said Thursday.
The Boston Heights location, totaling about 150,000 square feet, will be the first Costco in Summit County and the fourth in Northeast Ohio. It anchors a development called the Marketplace, built off Hines Hill Road at the former site of the Boston Heights Country Club.
The development is in a prime spot: west of state Route 8, near the interchange at Interstate 80 (the Ohio Turnpike).
Construction on a Bass Pro Shop proposed for the Marketplace has yet to begin, though Costco and BassPro revealed their plans at roughly the same time about a year ago.
Boston Heights Mayor Bill Goncy said Thursday that Bass Pro still wants a store there. Goncy said a Bass Pro spokesman told him two or three weeks ago the company plans to begin building this year or next year.
Boston Heights officials have said the projects fit with the village’s long-term comprehensive plan, which includes increasing the tax base by attracting a destination retailer or business to the community of 1,300 residents.
About a third of the village sits within the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
“This building project is a great way of sustaining our community,” Goncy said.
Costco is a members-only retail warehouse, with most memberships costing $55 annually per household.
The temporary location — which is not a store, but rather a place to sign up for memberships — is at 8210 Macedonia Commons Blvd. It is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday this week. Beginning Monday, this site will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week until the store opens June 22.
The publicly traded Costco Wholesale Corp., with headquarters in Issaquah, Wash., outside Seattle, operates in 10 Ohio locations, including Avon, Mayfield Heights and Strongsville.
Goncy noted the Hines Hill Road corridor in the village is seeing a lot of growth.
New headquarters
The new headquarters and warehouse complex of the company that operates Arhaus furniture stores is located west of the Costco. Workers are already in the warehouse, and employees in Walton Hills in Cuyahoga County and other Northeast Ohio sites are expected to move into the new headquarters beginning around June, Goncy said.
More than 200 workers are to be employed at the complex.
Other planned growth in the corridor includes a Dominion East Ohio technical center, Goncy noted. The natural gas company said last year that it expects to occupy the facility east of state Route 8 this December , bringing all of its training operations into one location.
