The death of a 49-year-old man found by his landlord Saturday morning on North Hill has been ruled a homicide, the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled.

Phillip Goins was discovered bound by electrical wire in the living room of his home, dead of two gunshots wounds to the head.

According to a 911 call, Goins’ landlord reported the death to police. Goins had asked the landlord to repair a shower head at the home in the 200 block of Uhler Avenue. Goins paid his rent in person the day before, the landlord said.

“I knocked and didn’t hear nothing, so I entered the residence,” the landlord told a dispatcher, “and I find my tenant laying on the ground. He’s hog-tied and there’s blood around him. I’m not sure what’s going on.”

The medical examiner’s office conducted an autopsy Monday.

Police are investigating the homicide. Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Akron Police Department Detective Bureau at 330-375-2490, the U.S. Marshals Service at 864-4-WANTED or Summit County Crimestoppers Inc. at 330-434-COPS.
